Standing Committees

Membership:   Harvie Porter reported that we now have 47 members.  However, he has not sent out the mailings for this year.  These will be going out soon.

Higher Education Report:   Tim Whiteford stated he was trying to start a Math/Science Education Major at St. Michael’s College.  This is still at the discussion level.  He also stated that there will be a discussion between math educators and special education educators on how we can work with students with special needs in math.   He hopes that the discussion between these educators will develop in a future conference.  His goal is to have a type of clearing house that can be shared by everyone.

ATMNE Report:  Bob Sinclair reported on the October 5, 2005, meeting.   Mathwest has withdrawn from doing the 2007 ATMNE Conference.  Harvie reported that the ATMNE conference committee is looking at changing the rotation from every seven years to every six years.  He then asked the VCTM board for their input.  It was suggested that the year that the year Mathwest would normally do the conference that we do a community conference.  The May Journal is going to be on assessment.   The ATMNE spring board in April 7th and 8th at the Best Western in Fitchburg, Massachusetts.  The VCTM will have to submit a report at this time and bring 25 copies to the meeting.

NCTM Report:  Nancy Pejouhy reported that Skip Fennel is the new president of NCTM.  She stated that she spent three days on a panel working with him.

Newsletter:   The deadline is February 17, 2006, if you have anything to share or report.  Please submit any reports to David Rome.  Harvie stated that he received a flyer from Renesselaer for the newsletter which he will send along to David Rome.

PAEMST Report:  Nancy Pejouhy reported that Linda Parker is working on this cycle and has several nominations.  The deadline is the first Monday in May to submit an application.   The awardees will be decided upon in March of 2007 for elementary educators.

ATMNE Conference 2006:  Jill Wilkens reported that the next meeting is January 21, 2006, at Vermont Institutes Alumni Hall in Montpelier, Vermont.  She reported that the last meeting at the last meeting on November 19, 2005, there was discussion on sponsorships for the conference; registration fees were also discussed, and it was decided that breakfast would be included in the $80 fee for registration for the two days.  Separately, it would be $45 for Thursday and $60 for Friday, which would included breakfast.   Jill reported that at this point we have 160 applications for speakers.  Exhibits will be set up in one of the ballrooms on Friday only after breakfast.  The charge will be $60 per table.

Vermont Institutes Report:   No report.

Other Business:   2005 Fall VCTM conference was not as well attended as it could have been.   The VCTM Board commends Jean McKenny for all her hard work on the conferences for the last three years.   The Math Coalition talent search is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, May 10, 2006, at UVM during Math Day where awards are given to UVM students who have excelled the math exam; Texas Instruments will be donating calculators (TI-89).   Jean McKenny distributed a rough draft of ideas on assessment presentations for the 2006 VCTM Spring Conference.   This is tentatively scheduled for April 6, 2006.  We are still looking for presenters for assessment for this conference.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  Please send to Jean McKenny.

New Business:  Nancy Pejouhy reported that VT NEA is looking to partner with affiliates to hold their meetings on the same date to save teacher time and to improve attendance at the October conference.  They are proposing date changes, possibly the first Wednesday and Thursday in October, so those days are not treated as teacher vacation days.  They feels that this will save money for everyone in the long run.  The VCTM Board had some concerns and felt that the charge should be no more than what we charge for conferences at this time.   There was also concern on space.  At this time we pay no fee to schools when we use their facilities for the fall conference.  We only pay for conference costs.

Moved by Bob Sinclair and seconded by Jill Wilkins to adjourn the meeting at 7:50 p.m.  Motion was approved by unanimous vote.

The next meeting of the VCTM Board is March 23, 2006, at Vermont Institutes in Montpelier, Vermont.

Respectfully submitted,

Roberta A. Cota, Secretary
